The sales your sold-out sizes may be missing

Paste your store’s web address to count the sizes sold out on full-price styles you still sell. If we messaged you about sold-out sizes, the list came from your public product pages, the same pages this check reads.

This check needs JavaScript. Email us your store’s web address at jackparry@redprintstudios.com and we’ll send you the list of sizes sold out instead.

01The method

How the estimate is worked out

monthly sales of full-price sized styles × share of their sizes sold out × 40%

A day is the monthly figure × 12 ÷ 365. “Before a reorder arrives” is the same daily figure over your lead time, not an extra loss. The item count divides the monthly figure by the average price of a sold-out size.

Share of sizes sold out is read from your product pages today: sizes sold out on full-price styles that still have other sizes in stock. Styles sold out in every size and marked-down styles are left out, because they’re probably finished or being cleared. It’s a snapshot: a size that sold out this morning counts the same as one that’s been gone for months.

On 29 Oct 2026 we checked the public product pages of 20 clothing brands on our outreach list, picked partly because they had sizes sold out. On full-price styles, the median was 15.6% of sizes sold out.

40% is the share of shoppers who don’t buy something else from you when their size is gone. Two studies of real sales records found about 28%: Li et al. (2023), 217 single-brand footwear stores, where shoppers could try the next size; and Anderson, Fitzsimons and Simester (2006), a catalogue and website retailer that offered backorders. Shopper surveys put it higher: 43–49% in a worldwide study (Gruen, Corsten and Bharadwaj, 2002) and up to 65% among frustrated online shoppers (GT Nexus and YouGov, 2015, a survey paid for by a software company). Online, a sold-out button can’t offer the next size, so we use 40%, between the two.

It treats a sold-out size as selling about as well as your other sizes. It’s an estimate of sales, not profit, and not a promise of what a stock plan would win back.

02Questions

About the free check

If yours isn’t here, email us at jackparry@redprintstudios.com.

I’ve seen my result. What now?

Email us your store’s web address and we’ll find a time to set it up with you. For 30 days the plan runs alongside how you buy now, for free, and you compare the two. The free check only reads what your website shows anyone; the plan works from your own sales and stock, size by size.

What if a size is sold out on purpose?

Sometimes a missing size is on purpose, like the end of a line. Our messages and the free check only read what your website shows anyone, so they can’t tell the difference: treat the list as sizes to look through. The free check also leaves out marked-down styles, which are often being cleared, so its count can be lower than the one in our message.

Which stores does it work with?

Shopify stores whose product pages are public. It reads the same product list your website shows anyone. If a store isn’t on Shopify, is password-protected or doesn’t say which sizes are in stock, the check tells you, and you can type your own numbers instead.

What do you keep from a check?

A note of the store’s web address, its name, the result and its currency, with the time. Never the sales figure or the lead time you type: those stay in your browser. Our web host also records the IP address and browser details of whoever ran the check. The privacy note has the details, including how to have a note deleted.
